Six Dollar Sunrise

Nov 15 2006

I have always wanted an alarm clock that emitted light to wake me up “naturally,” but never wanted to pay the steep price for one, which tends to start around $80. It hit me that all i really need to make one was to find a timer that turned on an outlet at a specific time. I then realized that a device that does that should be fairly easy to locate, as they are used routinely for Christmas lights. I found one at the local mega mart that met my criteria: it had to repeat every 24 hours, have multiple time settings, and be inexpensive. After a few mornings of trials everything works out great, though the instant burst of brightness can be quite jarring, it still does the job.

For Sale: Motorla Q & Canon 10D

Sep 28 2006

Buy ME!!!I decided to sell my new Motorola Q after Verizon replaced my last one. I got tired of paying for the ridiculously priced data plan, and it is absolutely necessary to have with the phone. So I have a brand new, never activated Motorola Q available with extended battery, and 2Gb Mini SD card available for $400. I should have an eBay auction up soon, but until then contact me for more info.

I'm for SALE!!!Also, I decided to get upgrade to the 20D or possibly 30D, so that means my 10D is for sale. It’s in good condition and has no problems that I know of. It will come in the original box with all original accessories and I’ll even throw in a 512mb compact flash card. I’m looking for $500, and will also be available on eBay soon.

Motorola Q: Getting Started

Jun 30 2006

Motorola Q

After losing my Motorola E815 last week I was faced with a dilemma, buy a refurbished model from Verizon for $90 or upgrade to an insanely cool full featured Smartphone, I choose the latter. I evaluated the different models and ultimately choose the Motorola Q for its features and the fact that it was twice as thin as the competing models. As I’m sure there are others looking for resources on how to get the most out of the Q, I compiled a few links that I found helpful. As you might notice most of them come from the Qusers.com
forums and I highly recommend checking them out if you need more info.

Trip Lapse #2: Huron, SD to Rapid City,SD

May 27 2006

This is my second attempt of a creating a “Trip Lapse.” It spans across most of the state of South Dakota starting in the East (Huron), and ending in the west (Rapid City). I set the camera to record an image every 3 seconds which helped the overall flow of the movie, but I ran into problems with mounting and windshield reflection that need to be addressed in the future. To address the problems I plan on building a magnetic enclosure and mount for the top of my car which should eliminate the glare. The video is running at 30 fps and is 10.1 MB.

City of Industry

May 19 2006

A few of my friends and I had this great idea to form a band one night, record an EP, then break up all within a 24 hour period. So we gathered up an accordion, some small electric toy keyboards, a guitar, and of course my drums and put something together. The result is “City of Industry” and what we call the “Iceburgs! Iceburgs!” EP. We find the songs to be hilarious, even without lyrics, and we already have almost 400 plays after 2 days.

Trip Lapse #1: Vermillion, SD to Huron, SD

May 13 2006

Eastern South Dakota scenery isn’t all that great, maybe that’s one of the reasons why our interstate speed limits are set at 75mph. At any rate, today on my way back home from college I set my hooked my webcam up to my laptop and recorded what I’m calling a trip lapse. The camera took a photo every 10 seconds for the ‘scenic’ three hour journey and in all recorded 969 images. The movie is running at 12fps and the result is a little rough, but I look forward to experimenting with the technique further. I think one photo every 5 seconds will make it more fluid, but i don’t want to increase the length too much. The two towns you see in the video are Sioux Falls and Mitchell respectively.

Google Trends

May 13 2006

I highly recommend playing with Google Trends, one of Google Labs latest projects. Simply type in a word and it will show you a graph of that particular search term over time. You can even do comparisons between subjects to compare search traffic; this is where the fun begins. Here are some that I checked out.
