Spam Stories, Part 1 “Into the Night Jungle Waif”
One day I decided to read some spam just for the fun of it and I happened to find that about half of the spam email I received had a little story or quote that didn’t make any sense at the bottom. So I decided to put together a story using only bits and pieces found in the bottom of emails and nothing else, here it goes:
Into the Night
By: Freaking Anoying Spammers, compiled by Nic Myers
When her master entered the scene he gazed long and earnestly; she fell a-musing. He had two dogs, a Hound trained to assist him in his sports, The Hawk, the Kite, and the Pigeons impetuous, headstrong, and obstinate in maintaining their own. The Wolf, grinning and grinding his teeth, exclaimed “Is Meriem to him to come and live with him?” saying that he would enjoy greater beautiful plumage. He then proceeded to tell the story of the jungle waif in so far as he knew…
“The Gargoyles had backed away a distance when they heard the sound of talking, for although our friends had spoken in low tones their words seemed loud in the silence surrounding them… |inline
Camera Obscura Extravaganza. Take 2
I turned my extra bedroom into a camera obscura. Here is the resulting image (click for larger image):

You might not immediately understand what’s going on in the photo, but a closer look reveals that I am standing near the top of the photo upside down. This makes for a very interesting self portrait.

Camera Obscura Extravaganza
Over a year ago when I was just moving in to my apartment in Brookings I decided to turn my empty room into a giant camera. Here is the result. (click for larger images)

Now, there’s no Photoshop magic happening in these photos (besides resizing of course). What you are looking at is a “Camera Obscura,” and can be created very easily by covering a window completely with some light blocking materials such as aluminum foil and then by making a small hole in foil about the size of a quarter, letting light in. what you will see is the outside world reflected through the small hole, upside down. Essentially its just a very large pinhole camera, but try it out, its cool.

Google Backup, to the rescue!
So, my host had some hard drive problems and happened to loose the primary partition on one of the hard drives on the server that this site is hosted on. When i talked to them they said they had to restore around 500 domains and 350 accounts from this one server alone, that would suck. Anyway, I didn’t t lose anything other then my last couple blog entries that I didn’t have backed up, so i was fortunate, but still disappointed. So i decided to check and see if Google just happened to have a cache of my site from very recent, and sure enough they did! Now thanks to Google i have recovered all but one post. Thanks Google!
